Russell Brand's Rape and Sexual Assault Trial Delayed Until October
Russell Brand Trial Delayed Until October Over Sex Charges

The high-profile criminal trial involving comedian and actor Russell Brand, facing multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault, has been officially postponed until October. The 50-year-old entertainer, who denies all charges, was originally scheduled to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court beginning June 16, 2025.

Expanded Charges Lead to Postponement

During a hearing on Monday, Mr Justice Bennathan agreed to delay the proceedings until October 12 after fresh charges involving two additional complainants were brought against Brand. The judge formally joined together the two sets of charges the defendant now faces.

Brand is accused of three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault, and one allegation of indecent assault. Six different women have come forward with allegations spanning from 1999 to 2009. The original trial was expected to last five weeks, but with the new claims, proceedings are now anticipated to extend to approximately two months.

Specific Allegations Detailed

The specific allegations include claims that Brand raped a woman in a Bournemouth hotel room during a Labour Party conference in 1999. Another accusation alleges that in 2004, he grabbed a television worker's breasts before orally raping her after dragging her into a male toilet.

Further claims involve Brand allegedly grabbing a radio station worker's face, pushing her against a wall, kissing her, and then groping her buttocks and breasts. The comedian was first charged with offences against four women in April 2025, with the additional two complainants coming forward more recently.

Logistical and Timing Concerns

Mr Justice Bennathan expressed concerns that beginning the trial in mid-June might cause the court to run out of time to properly hear the expanded case. The judge also raised practical issues about securing jurors willing to sit through the initial summer months of what promises to be a lengthy trial.

Brand, who resides in Hambleden, Buckinghamshire but currently lives in the United States, was represented at Monday's hearing by barrister Ian Winter KC. The defendant himself was not present in court, having already appeared twice previously to enter not guilty pleas to all allegations.

Brand's Public Persona and Legal Status

The comedian, who rose to fame in the 1990s and became one of Britain's most recognizable stand-up performers, has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. Brand gained additional celebrity through presenting Big Brother spin-off shows and was married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012.

He is now married to Laura Gallacher, sister of sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, with whom he has three children. During his last court appearance, Brand arrived carrying a bible while wearing an unbuttoned animal print shirt and white hat. When questioned by reporters about his feelings outside court, he simply responded: 'Blessed.'

Despite the serious nature of the charges, Brand has been granted bail throughout the criminal proceedings and continues to maintain his not guilty plea as the case prepares for its October hearing date.
