Adam Olverson, 31, is due to appear in Preston Magistrates' Court today (Wednesday, July 1) charged with manslaughter following the shooting death of his father, Thomas Olverson, at their family farm almost two years ago.
Details of the Shooting
Thomas Olverson, known locally as Tommy, was believed to be working on his farm on Thursday, July 25, 2024, when he was shot shortly before 5pm. Emergency services rushed to Marsh Hey Farm on Pinfold Lane in Scarisbrick, but Mr Olverson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lancashire Police launched an investigation and initially arrested a 29-year-old man at the time. Nearly two years later, on Monday, June 29, Adam Olverson was re-arrested and subsequently charged with manslaughter, possession of a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without a license.
Neighbour's Account
Andrew Overton, a neighbour, told the ECHO that he used to work for Thomas Olverson as a teenager. He described him as a "quiet loner" who kept to himself. "He would keep himself to himself, he was very quiet. He would always be walking past the house to his field at the end of the road," Overton said.
Another neighbour, Dennis Fullingham, recalled seeing Mr Olverson regularly walking with a machete to cut cabbage in his field. "I have never seen anyone else at the farm. I feel sorry for them, I really do," Fullingham added.
Funeral and Family
Mr Olverson's funeral was held at St Catharine's Church in Scarisbrick, attended by his wife, son, and a police officer. The farm, where Adam Olverson is believed to still live, is located off Southport Road, a main route connecting Southport, Ormskirk, and Burscough.
