Students' Final Messages Before Fatal Nightclub Crush Revealed

An inquest into the deaths of two students crushed at a Northampton nightclub has heard of 'chaotic' scenes. Nabila Nanfuka, 22, and Laurene-Danielle Jackson, 19, died at Lava and Ignite nightclub in October 2011 after being trapped on stairs.

The jury at Northampton County Hall viewed footage of people climbing over each other to escape. No criminal charges have been brought. Ms Nanfuka, from Neasden, studied at the University of Northampton; Ms Jackson, from Wembley, studied at Kingston University. Both died of asphyxia.

Det Insp Louise Hemmingway said it was impossible to accurately count attendees as clickers were reset to zero. CCTV analysis showed up to 1,687 people were in the club for the 'Wickedest Wickedest' R 'n' B night. Between 03:10 and 03:50 BST, DJs repeatedly told clubbers to leave or miss their coaches, causing a rush to the exit.

Clubgoer Chinedu Ani described people stuck on top of each other, crying and screaming. 'If everybody had used their initiative and gone more slowly, this wouldn't have happened,' he said. Abigail Atakora, who spent 10 days in hospital, said she fell on the stairs and others fell on top of her.

The inquest continues.
