UK man charged with 56 sexual offences against ex-wife

A man from north London is facing a total of 56 sexual offence charges, including allegations he drugged and raped his then wife over a period of 13 years, in a case that has seen five other men also charged.

Extensive List of Charges

Philip Young, aged 49 and formerly of Swindon but now residing in Enfield, north London, has been charged with a litany of serious crimes. The charges encompass multiple counts of rape, administering a substance with intent to overpower his victim to enable sexual activity, and voyeurism.

Further charges include possession of indecent images of children and possession of extreme pornographic images. The alleged victim in the case is Young's now ex-wife, Joanne Young, 48, who has formally waived her legal right to anonymity.

Five Other Men Accused

In what police describe as a "complex and extensive" inquiry, five additional men have been charged with sexual offences against the same woman. All six defendants are scheduled to appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The other accused men are:

  • Norman Macksoni, 47, of Sharnbrook, charged with one count of rape and possession of extreme images.
  • Dean Hamilton, 46, of no fixed abode, charged with rape, sexual assault by penetration, and two counts of sexual touching.
  • Conner Sanderson Doyle, 31, of Swindon, charged with sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching.
  • Richard Wilkins, 61, of Toothill, Swindon, charged with one count of rape and sexual touching.
  • Mohammed Hassan, 37, of Swindon, charged with sexual touching.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 2010 and 2023.

Victim Support and Legal Proceedings

Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith of Wiltshire Police acknowledged the significance of the development. "This is a significant update in what is a complex and extensive investigation," he stated.

He confirmed that the victim, Joanne, had been supported by specially trained officers throughout the process. "She has taken the decision to waive her automatic legal right to anonymity following multiple discussions with officers and support services," Det Supt Smith added.

James Foster, a Crown Prosecution Service specialist prosecutor, explained the basis for the prosecutions. "The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the prosecution... following a police investigation into alleged serious sexual offences against Joanne Young over a period of 13 years."

Foster confirmed that prosecutors had established there was sufficient evidence to charge and that pursuing criminal proceedings was in the public interest. He noted the close collaboration between the CPS and Wiltshire Police during the investigation.
