Former Premier League referee David Coote is due to be sentenced on Thursday, marking the culmination of a dramatic fall from grace. The 42-year-old officiated top-flight matches for over a decade before being suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in November 2024.
Coote's troubles began when a video emerged showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. The clip, which appeared to be from 2020, led to an immediate investigation by PGMOL, who stood him down pending the outcome.
Further controversy followed when additional footage surfaced, allegedly showing Coote snorting a white powder. The Football Association launched its own probe into the matter, and Coote was subsequently charged with misconduct. He admitted to the charges in December 2024.
The former referee, who took charge of 107 Premier League matches, now faces a potential lengthy ban from football. His sentencing hearing on Thursday will determine the extent of the punishment, with the FA seeking a significant sanction for bringing the game into disrepute.
Coote's case has highlighted the intense scrutiny faced by match officials in the modern game. The PGMOL has stressed its commitment to upholding high standards of conduct, while Coote has expressed remorse for his actions.
