A man who exaggerated his injuries to avoid prosecution after causing a fatal crash on the M62 has been jailed for 12 years. Steven Naylor, 41, from St Helens, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. His wife, Lisa Naylor, 40, was sentenced to four and a half years for her role in the deceit.
The crash occurred in April 2021, killing 23-year-old motorcyclist Owen Baugh. Merseyside Police said Naylor spent years falsely claiming he was medically unfit to be prosecuted, spinning a 'web of lies' that he was incapable of living a normal life.
However, covert surveillance footage captured Naylor dancing, playing rugby, and buying drinks in pubs, contradicting his claims. The evidence led to his conviction and sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Roper said: 'Steven Naylor’s actions were a calculated attempt to evade justice, causing further distress to Owen’s family. The sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the deception that followed.'
