Newcastle thug stamped on neighbour's head until unconscious

Joshua Tumilty, a 34-year-old man from Newcastle, has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison after repeatedly stamping on his neighbour's head until the victim lost consciousness. The attack occurred on November 11 last year at around 11:45 am in the street, according to Newcastle Crown Court.

Attack Details

The court heard that Tumilty became involved in a confrontation with a man who was his neighbour. Oliver Conner, prosecuting, stated that other neighbours were alerted by shouting. The victim attempted to run away, but Tumilty followed, grabbed him, and threw him to the ground. Once on the ground, Tumilty kicked the victim twice in the head and stamped on his head twice. When the victim tried to get up, Tumilty pushed him back down and stamped on his head again. The victim was pushed down a second time and kicked again. By this point, the victim was visibly bleeding from the head. Tumilty then stamped eight more times on his head as the victim lay unresponsive on the ground.

Injuries and Hospitalisation

The victim suffered two fractures to his pelvis, a fractured hand, cuts and bruises, swelling, and an injury above his eyebrow requiring stitches. He spent 13 days in hospital. The attack has affected his mobility, and he no longer drives.

Other Offences

Tumilty pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent. While in custody, he assaulted a police officer. He also admitted to a series of other offences, including assaulting police officers on July 29, 2024, and stealing chocolate, confectionery, and biscuits worth hundreds of pounds from shops on four occasions between September 2 and 11. After his arrest, he spat on a police officer through the hatch of his cell. On September 17, Tumilty was involved in a street fight on Morton Street, Newcastle, where he used a long piece of wood to hit another man, who struck him with a hammer. He admitted affray for that incident.

Defence and Sentencing

Rachel Hedworth, defending, said Tumilty's mental health had declined at the time. She added: He is, in the cold light of day, absolutely sickened and horrified by his offending in terms of the violent behaviour. He does not recognise the person in the footage. He has found it very difficult to view the footage and read the effect his behaviour has had on others. He is very very remorseful for his behaviour. The judge sentenced Tumilty to a total of four years and nine months for all offences.
