Rapist who terrorized victim faces justice after anonymous call
Rapist terrorized victim, faced justice after call

A violent offender who subjected a woman to a harrowing campaign of abuse, including rape and near-drowning, has been convicted following an anonymous tip-off to police. Damon Furmedge, 36, formerly of Weaver Street, Winsford, was found guilty of rape, assault, and two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour after an eight-day trial at Chester Crown Court, which concluded on May 29.

The court heard that Furmedge's abuse began when he threw the woman, fully clothed, into a bath of water and held her underwater by the neck. He repeated this act twice, leaving her terrified that she would die. The victim later disclosed that Furmedge had also strangled her and subjected her to a relentless pattern of threats, violence, and control. She became so frightened that she contemplated taking her own life to escape his grip.

Surveillance and Control

Furmedge installed cameras and microphones in the woman's home and tracked her movements through her phone. He threatened to harm her if she tried to leave. Cheshire Police first became aware of the situation in November 2024 after receiving an anonymous call. When officers spoke to the victim alone, she was initially too scared to provide information. However, as trust was built, she bravely recounted the full extent of Furmedge's abuse.

Justice Delivered

Furmedge was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on July 17. Detective Constable Hannah Lamborn of Northwich CID praised the victim's courage and highlighted the importance of the anonymous call. 'The level of intimidation and violence was terrifying for the victim who wanted to report Furmedge but was scared of the repercussions. The anonymous call that night gave her the courage to speak out about her ordeal. I think that's a vital example of how concerned friends and family can call out this horrific behaviour and help their loved-one break free,' she said.

Lamborn added, 'I would personally like to thank the victim for her courage in supporting the Police investigation so that justice could be served. Our officers are here to help you, with the assistance of specialist agencies, to break the cycle of abuse and get the perpetrator away from you and convict them of their abhorrent crimes.'
