The Australian hailed as a national hero for his actions during the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack is facing a gruelling road to recovery, with his legal team confirming he must undergo another major surgical procedure.
A Complex Recovery from Critical Injuries
Ahmed al-Ahmed, 44, was shot twice in the shoulder on Sunday as he tackled one of the two attackers to the ground and wrestled a weapon from his grip. His intervention is credited with helping to end the rampage, which left 15 people dead, including one of the gunmen, 50-year-old Sajid Akram.
His lawyer, Sam Issa, told ABC News that a recent operation was "complex" as it involved treating nerve damage. "Ahmed's in a lot of discomfort today, naturally," Mr Issa stated. The father-of-two, who remains in a critical but stable condition at Sydney's St George Hospital, is now scheduled for a further surgery expected to last up to eight hours.
Prime Minister Hails 'The Best of Our Country'
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Mr Ahmed in hospital this week, praising the fruit shop owner's extraordinary courage. Mr Albanese revealed that Mr Ahmed, who was raised in Syria, was simply trying to get a coffee when the shooting started.
"He was trying to get a cup of coffee and found himself at a moment where people were being shot in front of him," the Prime Minister said. "He decided to take action, and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians. He is a very humble man."
Mr Albanese added: "At a moment where we have seen evil perpetrated, he shines out as an example of the strength of humanity. Ahmed, you are an Australian hero."
Aftermath of the Sydney Terror Attack
The attack, which officials have described as an ISIS-inspired antisemitic assault, has prompted a national vow to clamp down on gun ownership. The second alleged attacker, Naveed Akram, 24, who was critically injured by police, has now awoken from a coma.
He has been charged with 59 offences relating to what is considered Australia's worst mass shooting since the 1990s. The community continues to mourn the victims while celebrating the selfless actions of individuals like Ahmed al-Ahmed, whose bravery likely saved countless lives on that tragic day.
