France Investigates Suspected Iranian Connection in Thwarted Paris Bomb Plot

French authorities are actively investigating a potential link to Iran following the successful prevention of a bomb attack outside a Bank of America building in Paris over the weekend. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed on Monday that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the foiled terrorist operation.

Similarities to Recent European Attacks Raise Suspicion

The authorities suspect there could be a direct connection to Iran due to striking similarities with other recent attempted attacks across Europe. These previous incidents were claimed by a pro-Iranian group, according to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. He emphasized that the modus operandi observed in Paris matches actions previously carried out in the Netherlands and Belgium.

On Saturday morning, Paris police officers spotted two individuals carrying a suspicious shopping bag near the Bank of America premises in the city's 8th arrondissement. This prompt observation led to immediate intervention and subsequent arrests. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office has since opened a formal investigation into alleged terrorism-related offenses.

Pro-Iranian Group Claims Responsibility for Related Attacks

Nuñez explained on French radio RTL that in the European cases with similar characteristics, claims were made by a pro-Iranian group that explicitly linked the attacks to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The group, known on Telegram as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (translating to the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right), has also claimed responsibility for an attack last week in London where four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were deliberately set on fire.

"Typically, intelligence services of this country (Iran) operate in this way: they use proxies, a series of subcontractors, often common criminals, to carry out highly targeted actions aimed at U.S. interests, the interests of the Jewish community, or Iranian opposition figures," Nuñez stated during his radio interview.

Heightened Security Measures Implemented Across France

The interior minister further revealed that French authorities have significantly stepped up security around key personalities and sensitive sites since the United States and Israel launched their military campaign against Iran on February 28th. These enhanced protective measures include personal security details for certain figures from the Iranian opposition community residing in France.

The investigation continues as authorities examine the evidence and interrogate the detained suspects to determine the full extent of the plot and any international connections. This incident underscores the ongoing terrorist threats facing European capitals and the complex geopolitical tensions influencing such security challenges.
