Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed on Monday that investigators are examining whether individuals who brought explosive devices to protests outside Gracie Mansion were inspired by the Islamic State terrorist organization.
Explosive Incident During Contentious Protests
The dangerous devices were hurled during chaotic counterprotests on Saturday near the historic Gracie Mansion, which serves as the official residence of New York City's mayor. The explosives were thrown during a "Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City" event organized by far-right activist Jake Lang. Commissioner Tisch emphasized that although the devices failed to detonate, they possessed the potential to cause severe injuries or fatalities.
Two Suspects in Custody
Law enforcement officials have taken two individuals into custody for their alleged involvement in the confrontation. Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the suspects are believed to have come to the location with the intention of committing an act of terrorism. Neither suspect has been formally charged at this stage of the investigation.
Multi-Agency Terrorism Investigation
The New York Police Department is collaborating closely with federal prosecutors and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on this high-priority case. FBI agents from the bureau's specialized Joint Terrorism Task Force are actively participating in the investigation. Commissioner Tisch noted that investigators have thus far discovered no apparent connection to Iran or the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Security Response and Evacuations
Authorities identified a suspicious device in a vehicle on East End Avenue between 81st and 82nd Streets, prompting immediate security measures. Several surrounding streets were closed to traffic and pedestrians as a precaution. Limited building evacuations were ordered while the police bomb squad carefully assessed and worked to safely remove the dangerous device from the area.
The incident has raised significant security concerns about protests near government buildings and the potential for extremist violence in urban centers.
