Jamie Varley, the 37-year-old convicted of the sexual abuse and murder of baby Preston Davey, is reportedly refusing to eat and sobbing in his cell after being transferred to HMP Wakefield, known as 'Monster Mansion'. The maximum-security Category A prison in West Yorkshire houses some of the UK's most dangerous inmates, including child killers, terrorists, and high-risk sex offenders.
Varley's Fear and Isolation
An insider told The Sun that Varley is "absolutely terrified" and has barely eaten since arriving at Wakefield on Monday. He is confined to his cell and has been offered separate exercise but has not taken it. The source added: "Varley will have an awful time at the prison, which is what he deserves." Officers are keeping close tabs on him, but due to staff shortages, this may not last.
Varley is aware of the fates of other notorious inmates at Wakefield, such as Ian Watkins, who was murdered there, and Kyle Bevan, and fears a brutal attack. He has a "massive target on his back" due to the nature of his crimes.
Enhanced Prisoner Status
Despite his horrific crimes, Varley reportedly remained an 'enhanced' inmate—the highest privilege level—before his transfer. This entitled him to £33 per week for canteen treats and a 24-hour Freeview TV package. However, his privileges may be reviewed at Wakefield.
