Turkish security forces have launched a major counter-terrorism operation, detaining over a hundred individuals suspected of links to Islamic State (IS) amid fears the extremist group was plotting attacks during the Christmas and New Year period.
Massive Pre-Dawn Raids Across Istanbul
In a coordinated sweep early on Thursday, police from Istanbul's Counter-Terrorism Department struck at 124 separate locations across the metropolis. Authorities confirmed the detention of 115 suspects, with warrants issued for a total of 137 individuals. Operations to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that intelligence indicated IS had issued a call to action, specifically encouraging attacks against non-Muslims during the festive season. Investigators believe the suspects were in the active preparation phase for attacks targeting crowded public celebrations.
Weapons, Ammunition and Cross-Border Links
During the raids, officers seized firearms, ammunition, and what were described as 'organisational documents' connected to the terrorist network. Prosecutors revealed a concerning international dimension, stating the detained suspects were in contact with Islamic State operatives outside Turkey, pointing to potential cross-border coordination.
While specific targets were not disclosed, officials confirmed the alleged plots were aimed at events during the Christmas and New Year period. The arrests follow a separate operation announced by Turkish intelligence just days earlier, targeting IS networks beyond the country's borders.
Context of a Persistent Threat and Global Resurgence
Turkey, which shares a nearly 900-kilometre border with Syria, has been repeatedly targeted by Islamic State in the past. The country faces ongoing security risks due to its geographic position. Major cities like Istanbul have suffered deadly attacks, including a 2017 New Year’s Eve nightclub shooting that killed 39 people.
This latest crackdown coincides with renewed international warnings about a resurgence of IS activity. Western intelligence agencies report the group is attempting to rebuild operational capacity in Syria and Iraq, while expanding networks in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of Africa.
In Syria, IS has increased ambushes and attacks. The United States recently intensified its military response, launching air strikes against IS positions following the killing of three Americans this month. The global threat was underscored by a deadly attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Australia on December 14, where the alleged shooters pledged allegiance to IS, and by the foiling of a plot against a Christmas market in Poland last week.
The counter-terrorism operation in Turkey is continuing as security forces remain on high alert during the festive season.
