A courageous security guard was subjected to a vicious assault by a shoplifter attempting to steal from a Greggs store in Croydon, London. The attacker repeatedly kicked and punched the guard while an accomplice brazenly snatched a food item and fled the scene.
Shocking Footage Captures Violent Confrontation
Video footage from the incident shows the assailant kicking the security guard and shoving him against a wall, shocking bystanders including a young family. The guard attempted to push the thief out of the shop but was met with a barrage of punches and kicks.
In a dramatic moment, a Greggs employee hurled a wet floor sign at the attacker, shouting 'how dare you!' before the group of youths strode away nonchalantly. The Metropolitan Police have been notified and are investigating the assault.
Greggs Battling Widespread Shoplifting Epidemic
This violent episode underscores a broader crisis facing Britain's most popular bakery chain. Greggs stores are frequently targeted by shoplifters, with thefts becoming so rampant that the flagship Leicester Square location was compelled to hire a former serviceman as a bouncer to protect their pastries.
In response to the alarming rise in thefts and attacks on staff, Greggs has implemented several security measures. Employees in some of the busiest stores now wear body cameras capable of recording up to 90 minutes of footage, aiming to deter potential thieves.
Desperate Black Market for Baked Goods
Guards at the Croydon store previously revealed that desperate shoplifters have established a 'black market' for sausage rolls and doughnuts, selling them on crime-ridden streets for as little as 50p each. This illicit trade highlights the severe economic pressures driving such crimes.
Recent Cases Highlight Persistent Problem
Just last week, a prolific thief nicknamed the 'Hamster' by staff was spared jail despite stealing nearly £2,000 worth of items from a Greggs in Greenford, west London. Adam Gosling, 39, targeted the store 38 times over a six-week period between December 2025 and February 2026, with thefts ranging from £12.30 to £100 per visit.
Prosecutors at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court detailed that Gosling's spree amounted to £1,817.50. Surveillance footage shows the hooded man ransacking Lucozade bottles from fridges and, in another clip, returning with a mask to shamelessly stash multiple orange juice bottles into a bag while employees looked on.
Additional Incidents Across London
In July, a shoplifter was physically restrained by two security guards at a Hammersmith Greggs as he attempted to smuggle out bottles of fizzy drink. Horrified onlookers watched the suspect grapple with staff at Hammersmith Station, with one passerby even intervening during the altercation.
Footage from that incident shows a young man attempting to steal food and drink items before being forced to drop them, unleashing a swearing tirade at guards before leaving in a strop.
Greggs Implements Major Security Overhauls
To combat this escalating issue, Greggs has undertaken significant operational changes. In June, the chain removed self-service fridges and placed sandwiches and bottled drinks behind counters in five branches. Other stores have installed bank-style screens on counters and deployed additional security guards to protect both products and personnel.
These measures reflect the chain's urgent response to protect its assets and ensure staff safety amid growing threats. The attack in Croydon serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by retail workers and the ongoing challenge of retail crime in urban areas.
