New Jersey Man Arrested for Stealing $200K in Metal from Ferris Wheel Site
In a brazen theft case, a New Jersey man has been accused of stealing nearly $200,000 worth of metal from a construction site involved in renovating a famous Ferris wheel on the Wildwood boardwalk. William Morelli, aged 67, was arrested on a theft charge after allegedly taking a large amount of metal from near Adventure Pier, according to Wildwood police.
Details of the Theft and Investigation
The incident unfolded over several days, with Morelli reportedly stealing the metal and then selling it to a scrap yard. Police stated that the stolen materials were valued at more than $175,000, with reports indicating the total loss approached $200,000. The investigation began on February 4, after a reporting party provided a suspect and vehicle description based on surveillance video review. Investigators later identified Morelli as the suspect.
Adventure Pier is one of three piers in Wildwood operated by Morey's Piers, which runs amusement rides and attractions. The theft occurred at a temporary work site for the Giant Wheel, a Ferris wheel that was taken down last fall from neighboring Mariner's Pier and sent to Philadelphia's Navy Yard for repairs.
Impact on the Community and Company Response
Geoff Rogers, chief operating officer of Morey's Piers, expressed that the amusement company is heartbroken by this incident. He emphasized the sentimental value of the Giant Wheel, which has been a boardwalk staple since 1985 and stands at 156 feet tall, making it one of the largest Ferris wheels on the East Coast. While this theft has presented a challenge, it does not change our commitment to completing this project on schedule, Rogers told news outlets.
The Ferris wheel is expected to return in time for the 2026 season, starting in May. Morelli was charged with Theft of Moveable Property and released, with information about his legal representation not immediately available.
