Thief Admits Stealing £2.1m Fabergé Egg and Watch in Soho

Algerian National Admits to Multi-Million Pound Fabergé Heist in London's Soho District

An Algerian thief has confessed to stealing a handbag containing an extraordinarily valuable Fabergé egg and a matching watch, with the combined items valued at over £2.1 million. The audacious theft occurred in the bustling Soho area of central London, highlighting a brazen crime targeting ultra-high-value luxury goods.

The Soho Pub Robbery and Subsequent Fraud

Enzo Conticello, who also uses the alias Hakim Boudjenoune and is believed to be originally from Algeria, executed the theft on November 7, 2024. He swiped the handbag belonging to Rosie Dawson, the Director of Premium Brands at the Irish Craft Whiskey Company, while she was at a pub in Soho. The purse contained not only standard personal items like credit cards and a laptop but also the immensely precious Fabergé egg and a Fabergé watch.

Following the theft, Conticello proceeded to use the stolen credit cards for personal purchases. He bought himself a drink, cigarettes, and various other goods at both a Co-Op and a Nisa Local store, adding charges of fraud to the serious allegation of theft.

Court Proceedings and Missing Treasures

Conticello was subsequently arrested by Metropolitan Police detectives in Belfast on January 26 of this year. He appeared at Southwark Crown Court dressed in a grey prison tracksuit, where he formally admitted to one count of theft and three separate counts of fraud by false representation. However, he did not enter a plea regarding an additional charge of concealing criminal property, specifically related to the missing Fabergé egg and watch.

Judge Martin Griffith presided over the hearing and remarked to the defendant, "It must have been rather a surprise to you when you saw that egg, what you did with it I don't know at the moment." The judge emphasized his desire to be absolutely certain about the precise value of the jewellery, noting wryly, "Unfortunately, you can't ask Mr Fabergé, can you?"

The court was informed that the items have a minimum valuation of $2.8 million, equivalent to approximately £2.1 million, though the exact worth was not detailed during the proceedings. Both the exquisite Fabergé egg and the accompanying watch remain unaccounted for, with the Metropolitan Police actively appealing to the public for any information regarding their whereabouts.

Background on the Fabergé Connection and Upcoming Hearing

Charles Fabergé, the renowned Russian goldsmith and jeweller, famously created the Fabergé eggs, which are crafted in the style of genuine Easter eggs using precious metals and gemstones. These items are among the most coveted luxury collectibles in the world.

The Irish Craft Whiskey Company, where victim Rosie Dawson holds a senior position, has a established partnership with the Fabergé brand. This collaboration previously yielded a bottle of 'Emerald Isle' whiskey that sold for $2.8 million at auction, setting a record as the world's most expensive bottle of whiskey ever sold.

Enzo Conticello remains remanded in custody as the legal process continues. A further hearing has been scheduled for March 6, where more details may emerge about the fate of the stolen treasures and the full extent of the charges against him.
