Couple die in Italy crash days after 20th birthday

A young Italian couple has been killed in a devastating road traffic accident, just days after the woman celebrated her 20th birthday.

A Tragic Night in Calabria

The fatal collision occurred on the night of Sunday, November 30, in the town of Cassano allo Ionio, located in the Calabria region of southern Italy. The incident involved a reported head-on crash between an Alfa Romeo Mito and a Fiat Panda.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where medical teams attempted to resuscitate the two young victims. Tragically, their efforts were unsuccessful, and Chiara Garofalo and Antonio Graziadio were both pronounced dead at the location of the accident.

Lives Cut Short

The couple's deaths have sent shockwaves through their local community. Chiara had only recently marked her 20th birthday. She was known to help her parents in the family bakery, while Antonio, her boyfriend, worked as an electrician.

Two other individuals involved in the collision were left with serious injuries. The condition of these survivors remains a primary concern for the authorities and local residents.

Community in Mourning

The Mayor of Cassano allo Ionio, Gianpaolo Iacobini, expressed the profound grief felt across the town. In a heartfelt statement, he said it was "hard to describe, even harder to understand."

"Once again, Cassano in tears mourns its children taken from life far too soon," he wrote. "In silence, a prayer for Chiara and Antonio, and an embrace for their families. And in silence, we hold our breath for the other two young people who were seriously injured."

Investigation Underway

In the wake of the tragedy, prosecutors from Castrovillari have opened a case file to investigate the precise circumstances of the crash. They are due to decide whether to order post-mortem examinations as part of their inquiries.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of road traffic accidents, cutting short promising young lives and leaving families and communities shattered.
