Four people have been killed in a devastating collision between a car and a taxi in Bolton during the early hours of Sunday morning. The crash, which occurred on Wigan Road, has claimed the lives of both drivers and two passengers, with three of the deceased believed to be teenagers.

Details of the Fatal Bolton Collision

Emergency services were called to Wigan Road in Bolton at approximately 12.45am on Sunday, 11 January 2025. The incident involved a red Seat Leon and a Citroën C4 Picasso taxi. The driver of the Seat and two of its passengers, alongside the driver of the Citroën taxi, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Five other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for urgent medical treatment. A significant police cordon was established as investigators began their work at the crash site.

Emergency Services Response and Witness Account

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service dispatched three fire engines and a technical response unit shortly after the collision was reported. Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to extricate casualties from the wreckage before handing them over to the North West Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson confirmed crews worked at the scene for roughly two hours to make the area safe. A local resident, speaking to The Bolton News, reported hearing a "very loud bang" at exactly 12.44am, followed by the screams of a female pedestrian who witnessed the crash. The witness described the woman as being so distressed that police had to prevent her from fainting.

Appeal for Information from Greater Manchester Police

Greater Manchester Police have launched a urgent appeal for information as their Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) works to establish the full circumstances of the tragedy. Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen either vehicle prior to the collision, witnessed the incident itself, or who has relevant dashcam or CCTV footage.

Formal identification of the victims is still ongoing. Detective Sergeant Liz Hopkinson of the SCIU stated: "This is a truly heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have lost their lives. We are committed to understanding exactly what led to this collision and would ask anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to contact us."
