Man Killed in Single-Vehicle BMW Crash on A75 Named as Phillip Thompson

Police Scotland have formally identified the man who died in a tragic road traffic collision on the A75 earlier this month. The victim has been named as 54-year-old Phillip Thompson, who was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash involving his BMW X5.

Timeline of the Fatal Incident

The collision occurred at approximately 12:50pm on Friday, January 16, 2026, on the A75 trunk road to the west of Dumfries in Scotland. Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service, were dispatched immediately following reports of the single-vehicle incident.

Despite their rapid response, Mr Thompson, who was the sole occupant and driver of the vehicle, was declared deceased at the location. The major route, which connects Stranraer and the Cairnryan ferry ports with the A74 at Gretna, was subsequently closed for nearly ten hours to facilitate a thorough investigation by collision specialists.

Ongoing Police Investigation and Public Appeal

Police Scotland have confirmed that enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash remain active. Sergeant Colin Ramage, leading the investigation, has issued a renewed appeal for information from the public.

"Our thoughts remain with Phillip's family and friends and our enquiries into the crash are continuing," stated Sergeant Ramage. "I would appeal to anyone who has yet to speak to us to get in touch."

The force is particularly keen to hear from:

  • Any motorists who were travelling on the A75 in the area around the time of the incident.
  • Individuals who may have witnessed the collision or events leading up to it.
  • Drivers with dashcam systems installed in their vehicles who were in the vicinity that afternoon.

Officers have asked that anyone with potential footage review their recordings for any material that could be significant to the investigation.

How to Assist the Investigation

Anyone with information that could assist Police Scotland is urged to contact them directly. The public should call 101 and quote the relevant incident number: 1526 of January 16, 2026.

The force has expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Phillip Thompson during what they describe as an "extremely difficult time." The appeal underscores the critical role public information can play in helping authorities understand the precise causes of such tragic events on Scotland's roads.
