A two-year-old boy has been killed in a major collision on the A1 in Cambridgeshire, casting a shadow over the days leading up to Christmas. Five other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries following the crash.
Details of the A1 collision
The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway of the A1, just past the Stibbington Junction, at approximately 6.20pm on Friday, 20 December 2025. According to Cambridgeshire Police, a Toyota Auris had broken down and was subsequently hit by a Volkswagen Touran.
The young child, who was a passenger inside the stationary Toyota, died at the scene. Five other occupants of the Toyota were transported to Peterborough City Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 64-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.
Arrest and police investigation
The driver of the Volkswagen was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail and is required to return to the police on 20 March 2026 while the investigation continues.
Officers from the force's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now conducting a thorough probe into the circumstances that led to the tragic event. They are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
Appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage
Sergeant David Mcllwhan expressed the force's condolences, stating: “Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision. The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers.”
He added a direct appeal to the public: “I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage but was unable to stop at the scene to get in touch.”
Police are specifically asking for:
- Witnesses to the collision itself.
- Drivers with dashcam footage who were travelling on the A1 northbound near Stibbington between 6.00pm and 6.40pm on 20 December.
- Any information about the moments immediately before the crash.
