Tragic A55 Collision Claims Woman's Life and Leaves Three Seriously Injured

A devastating road traffic incident on the A55 in North Wales has resulted in the death of a woman and left three other individuals with serious injuries. The collision, which involved a heavy goods vehicle and a car, occurred near the Conwy Tunnel, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Emergency Services Mobilise to Scene of Fatal Crash

Emergency services were dispatched to the A55 westbound at Junction 17 in Conwy Morfa following reports of a two-vehicle collision at approximately midday on Thursday, 29 January. North Wales Police confirmed that despite the best efforts of responders, a woman in her 40s, who was travelling in the car, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Welsh Ambulance Service deployed a significant number of resources, including four emergency ambulances and two high acuity response units. Their efforts were bolstered by four off-duty paramedics who stopped to provide assistance at the crash site.

Air Ambulances Transport Injured to Hospitals

Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service utilising three Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters. Two of the injured individuals were airlifted to hospitals in Stoke and Aintree, while a third person was transported by road ambulance to Aintree for further medical treatment.

All four occupants were travelling in the same car involved in the collision. The driver of the heavy goods vehicle is currently assisting police with their ongoing enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Road Closures and Ongoing Police Investigation

Following the collision, both sides of the expressway were closed, causing significant disruption to traffic in the area. The westbound carriageway closure has since been partially lifted, with a single lane of traffic now flowing from the Conwy Tunnel exiting at the J17 Conwy Morfa off slip before re-joining the carriageway.

Investigations by the North Wales Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit continue at the scene as officers work to establish the precise sequence of events leading to the tragic incident.

Authorities Appeal for Witness Information

Chief Inspector Trystan Bevan expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased woman and extended his thoughts to all those affected by the collision. He issued a public appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may possess relevant dash-cam footage to come forward as soon as possible.

Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, acknowledged the major incident on the A55 and thanked motorists for their patience during the ongoing situation. He advised travellers to expect significant delays in the area and to consult Traffic Wales for the latest updates.
