Brooke George, a 23-year-old British TikTok influencer from Gravesend, Kent, is facing the death penalty by firing squad after being charged with murder in Dubai. She claims she stabbed her 26-year-old British boyfriend in self-defence following repeated physical abuse.
Background of the relationship
According to campaign group Detained in Dubai, George met her partner on Facebook and travelled to Dubai after developing an online relationship. A first visit was positive, but during a second trip, she alleges her partner became increasingly controlling and abusive. After a night at a bar, she claims he became intoxicated and assaulted her.
Arrest and charges
Detained in Dubai reported that a 'bruised and battered' George was arrested in the early hours of Monday and charged with murder, despite what the group describes as insufficient investigation. She has reportedly received little explanation due to language barriers, has been deprived of access to her embassy, and was forced to make statements without a lawyer present.
Family and official response
George's mother, Thereza George, expressed deep concern for her daughter's welfare, stating: 'I have never seen my daughter so frightened in my life. She was crying uncontrollably. I could see that one of her eyes was badly swollen and was beginning to close.' A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are in touch with a British woman detained in the UAE, we are supporting her family, and we are in contact with the local authorities.'
Legal implications
If convicted, George could face execution by firing squad under UAE law. The case has drawn attention to the legal risks faced by British nationals abroad, particularly in jurisdictions with harsh penalties for murder.
