WA Police Assistant Commissioner Martin Haime addressed the media on Sunday, stating the incident was a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of sudden violence. 'The community is absolutely tired of seeing this level of violence,' he said.

Police revealed they were only 'a matter of metres away' when the incident occurred. A 20-year-old man from Lesmurdie was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and appeared before Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.

A Respected Figure in Labor Circles

Tim Picton is a well-known figure in Australian political circles. He served as an advisor to Senator Don Farrell during the Gillard government and later worked in the office of former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews.

His most notable achievement was directing the campaign for WA Labor's landslide 2021 state election victory, which left the Liberal opposition with just two seats. He also directed the 2022 federal election campaign for WA Labor and is the brother of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton.

Mr Picton's family issued a statement thanking medical staff, police, friends, and colleagues for their support. 'Tim is a much loved father, husband, brother and son, as well as a friend to so many across Australia,' they said.

WA Premier Roger Cook and SA Premier Peter Malinauskas both expressed their concern. 'The whole Labor team are thinking of him and his family during this difficult time,' Mr Cook stated. Mr Picton has most recently been working as strategy director for mining company Mineral Resources.
