Heroic Sacrifice in Venezuela Earthquakes

Andrea Bello, a mother from Venezuela, was discovered dead while protecting her one-year-old daughter Alana during the devastating twin earthquakes that struck the country on Thursday. Her husband, Marítimo de La Guaira footballer Héctor Bello, known as Kike, paid an emotional tribute to his wife, describing her as a hero.

Alana miraculously survived thanks to her mother's sacrifice and was found under the rubble by search and rescue teams. The toddler is currently in the hospital along with her aunt, who was also rescued from their collapsed home in La Guaira State.

Héctor Bello's Heartbreaking Tribute

In a series of social media posts, the Venezuelan defender expressed his grief and asked for strength. "Andrea, how do I explain to your daughter that you lost your life to save hers and I wasn't there in that moment to do anything?" he wrote. "Give me strength now because I can't take any more."

In another message, he added: "You'll always be our favourite hero, Mummy. I'm going to make sure our baby remembers how wonderful you were, how much you loved her. I'll tell her the story of how you saved her, how you gave your own life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who, even with your last breath, never abandoned her."

Héctor shared a photo of Alana after the earthquake, showing a large black eye and cuts around her eyebrow. He promised: "You won't see your daddy looking strong or smiling like always, but I promise I'll heal and make you the happiest girl in the world."

Scale of the Disaster

The twin earthquakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck near the capital Caracas just 39 seconds apart. According to the US Geological Survey, this was the strongest earthquake sequence in Venezuela since 1900. At least 589 people have died, and more than 50,000 are missing. The USGS has predicted over 10,000 deaths.

Thousands have been left homeless, especially in coastal areas and La Guaira State. Buildings have been reduced to rubble, and videos show people fleeing violently shaking areas. The Venezuelan football federation also confirmed the death of Yordelis Pereira, a player for Academia Puerto Cabello.

Relief Efforts and Community Support

Héctor continued to share information about Venezuelan relief efforts and updates on his daughter. "My daughter and her aunt are doing well, they won't be discharged today – they're staying at the hospital. Thank you so much for supporting me through this immense pain," he said.

Andrea Bello's heroic act has drawn widespread sympathy and admiration, with many praising her selflessness in saving her child at the cost of her own life.
