Kent Police Issue Dispersal Orders in Four Seaside Towns

Kent Police have been granted enhanced powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in four UK seaside towns as forecasters predict highs of 28°C over the weekend. Dispersal orders are now in effect in Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate, and Whitstable, with authorities bracing for potential trouble linked to the warm weather.

Dispersal Orders in Force for 48 Hours

The orders came into force at 2pm on Friday, July 3, in the Thanet towns of Broadstairs, Ramsgate, and Margate, and at 4pm in Whitstable. They are expected to remain active for 48 hours, covering the entirety of Saturday and Sunday. Under these orders, police can direct anyone aged 10 or over suspected of nuisance behaviour to leave the area. Those who refuse or return within a specified time limit risk arrest.

Areas Covered and Powers Granted

According to a statement from Kent Police, the dispersal order applies to Broadstairs, Westwood Cross shopping centre, central Ramsgate, and Margate town centre. It also covers beaches and railway stations in these locations. In Whitstable, the order spans the town centre, railway station, and seafront. Officers have the authority to seize speakers and other loud music equipment from individuals believed to be causing anti-social behaviour.

Police Statement on Maintaining Order

Superintendent Pete Steenhuis of Kent Police said: 'Our coastal towns are wonderful places to enjoy the warm, sunny weather and we want to keep them that way. The overwhelming majority of people who choose to socialise in these areas do so respectfully and responsibly, and anyone who would seek to spoil it for others should expect to be dealt with swiftly and robustly.'

The move comes as the UK experiences a heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach 28°C in parts of the country. Kent Police have urged the public to enjoy the seaside responsibly, warning that officers will take firm action against anyone engaging in anti-social behaviour.
