A 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Bury just minutes before the start of the New Year, with a suspect now charged with his murder.

Charges Brought Following Fatal Incident

Joe Burton, aged 23, tragically died at the scene on Tarn Drive in the Redvales area of the town. Police were called to the location shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve, Tuesday 31 December 2025.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a 25-year-old man, Anthony Junior Murray, has been charged in connection with the death. He faces charges of murder and possession of a bladed article. Murray appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody, with a scheduled appearance at Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday.

Heartfelt Tributes to a 'Loving and Caring' Friend

Friends of Joe Burton have paid moving tributes, describing a popular and kind-hearted young man. Chelsea Stonier, 22, said he was "the most amazing friend" whose loss had "broken us all."

Latisha Louise, also 22, who knew Joe from primary school, described him as "one of the most loving, caring and noisy in a good way kind of person." She added that he "filled people's lives with love and laughter."

Another friend, Bentley Tonge, 22, remembered Joe as a "happy, energetic person" and "one of the realest people I knew," who was always there for others.

Ongoing Police Investigation

GMP stated that specially trained officers are supporting Joe Burton's family as they come to terms with their loss. The investigation remains active.

A woman in her 20s was also arrested and has been released on bail pending further enquiries. Police are continuing to appeal for information.
