Manchester United's hopes of offloading Manuel Ugarte and bringing in a third midfielder this summer have suffered a significant setback. The Uruguayan international, who made just eight league starts last season, picked up what appeared to be a nasty injury during Uruguay's final World Cup group game against Spain in the early hours of Saturday morning.
World Cup Opportunity Turns Sour
United had viewed the World Cup as a lifeline to showcase Ugarte to potential buyers. With a book value of around £30 million and a disappointing two-year spell at Old Trafford, the club needed the tournament to boost his market value. However, Uruguay limped out of the group stage with just two points, and Ugarte carried his underwhelming club form onto the international stage.
In the match against Spain, shortly before Álex Baena scored the winning goal, Ugarte twisted awkwardly while attempting a tackle. He was carried off the field on a stretcher, visibly distraught. United must now await an update from Uruguay's medical staff, but early signs were not encouraging.
Impact on Transfer Plans
The Manchester Evening News reported on Saturday that United planned to sign a third midfielder this window, contingent on finding a buyer for Ugarte. If Ugarte remains at Old Trafford due to injury, the club may have to settle for just two midfield additions.
United paid Paris Saint-Germain £50.8 million for Ugarte in 2024, but his time in England has been largely disappointing. His first season was written off as an adaptation period, and promising pre-season performances in the United States last summer raised hopes that his career might take off. However, Ugarte summed up his 2025/26 campaign in a social media post in May: “A season with many difficult moments.”
Waiting Game for United
United now face a waiting game for positive news on Ugarte's injury. If he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the club's plan to sign three midfielders this summer could be in jeopardy.
