Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match ban by FIFA's disciplinary committee for a tackle that broke the leg of Canada's Ismael Kone during a World Cup group stage match in Vancouver. The incident occurred in the 51st minute of Canada's 6-0 victory on June 18, 2026, when Madibo's challenge from behind left Kone with a fractured tibia and fibula in his left leg. The referee issued a straight red card for serious foul play.
FIFA Confirms Suspension Length
FIFA confirmed the five-match suspension on Wednesday, citing the severity of the foul. The ban covers all international matches, and both Qatar and Madibo have the right to appeal the decision. The length of the suspension is among the longest for on-field incidents in World Cup history, though it falls short of the nine-match ban given to Uruguay's Luis Suarez for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini in 2014 and the eight-match suspension for Italy's Mauro Tassotti in 1994 for elbowing Spain's Luis Enrique.
Madibo Shows Remorse
Madibo was visibly distressed after the challenge and personally apologized to Kone after the final whistle. While his Qatar teammates traveled to Seattle to face Bosnia and Herzegovina, Madibo remained in Vancouver to spend time with Kone. In an Instagram post, Kone expressed gratitude: "You can't even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers."
Canada Coach Reacts
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch described the emotional aftermath: "It happened right in front of the bench, we could all hear it. I knew right away, it was similar to when Tajon (Buchanan) got hurt in training, it was right in front of us and everyone could hear the bone snap. Your heart goes out to him and everybody's a little shaken by the whole experience, because of the nature of the injury and also because Ismael is a big part of the heart of our team."
Qatar Manager Comments
Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui defended Madibo's character, saying: "He was very, very affected by this injury. Never was it his intention." The Qatar national team had not responded to a request for comment at the time of writing. Kone underwent surgery to repair the broken bones and is expected to face a lengthy recovery.
