A US Marine has disappeared from the amphibious Navy ship USS Anchorage off the coast of southern California, prompting a massive multi-agency search that lasted over 43 hours before shifting to recovery operations.
Disappearance During Training Exercise
The Marine was assigned to the USS Anchorage as part of training with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to CBS8. The sailor was reported missing shortly after 1 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
The Navy launched immediate search and rescue efforts, which continued for about 43 hours. At 9 p.m. on Friday, June 26, operations transitioned to recovery, indicating a shift in focus from rescue to locating the Marine's remains.
Multi-Agency Search Effort
Personnel from the US Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force participated in the search. Officials said crews searched approximately 2,400 square miles using three surface ships and 12 aircraft.
Deputy Public Affairs Officer Lt. Alissa Whyte stated, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time."
Ongoing Investigation
The Navy has not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Marine's identity is being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification, according to Navy policy. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
