A deadly shooting outside a Mormon church in Utah has left a community in shock, with two people confirmed dead and at least six others injured. The violent incident unfolded on Wednesday evening in the car park of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse.
Chaos in the Church Car Park
The horrific act of violence took place at approximately 7:30pm local time on Redwood Road in Salt Lake City. According to local reports, a funeral was being held at the church when an altercation allegedly broke out, leading to gunfire.
Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Glen Mills confirmed that at least eight victims were involved. Tragically, two of those victims died from their injuries. Three more are reported to be in a critical condition, while the status of the remaining three is currently unknown.
Active Manhunt Underway
Police have launched an extensive search for the shooter or shooters responsible. Authorities stated that at least one suspect fled the scene following the violence. "The situation still is very fluid," Mills told reporters, emphasising the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The response was significant, with at least 18 emergency units rushing to the scene. The situation was further complicated as several victims were transported to hospital in a private vehicle before emergency services arrived, according to police.
