The Royal Welsh Show, Britain's largest agricultural event, has announced a major change to its programme following the tragic death of a soldier. Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, 24, a member of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, died after falling from her horse on May 15 at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. In response, the show's organisers have decided to drop the traditional performance by the King's Troop at this year's event.
Show Organisers Express Condolences
In an official statement, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society expressed its deep regret over the cancellation. "The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society regrets to announce that the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will not be performing at this year's Royal Welsh Show," the statement read. "Following the tragic passing of Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, the society has released the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery from their commitment to perform the musical drive at this year's show."
The society extended its "most sincere sympathies and condolences to the family of Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan, her friends, and all her fellow soldiers during this incredibly difficult time." While disappointed by the absence, organisers fully understand the circumstances and look forward to welcoming the troop back to Llanelwedd in the near future.
A Tribute to a Fearless Soldier
Lance Bombardier Sullivan, known as "Sully" to her friends, was described by her commanding officer as a "fearless and gifted horsewoman." The Ministry of Defence paid tribute, noting her love for horses and natural affinity with them. She participated in significant national events, including the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023.
Defence Secretary John Healey MP said: "Lance Bombardier Ciara Sullivan was a brilliant young soldier who served our nation with dedication. We're all deeply shocked and saddened by her death. My thoughts are with Ciara's family, loved ones and colleagues at this devastating time."
