Israeli Settlers Rampage Through West Bank Villages as Gaza Strikes Claim Lives

Israeli settlers have launched violent attacks on Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank, smashing cars, setting fires, and injuring multiple men in a significant escalation of hostilities. This surge in violence coincides with Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip that resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians on Sunday, according to hospital authorities.

West Bank Settler Violence Intensifies

The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that settlers targeted at least six villages overnight Saturday into Sunday, including Silat al Dahr, Fandaqumiya near Jenin, Jalud and Salfit south of Nablus, and the agricultural regions of Masafer Yatta and the Jordan Valley. Homes and vehicles were set ablaze, Palestinians were pepper-sprayed, and at least five individuals sustained injuries during these assaults, which occurred during the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society confirmed that three Palestinians in the village of Jalud suffered head wounds from beatings and required hospitalization after confronting settlers, who were also reported injured. The rampage followed the death of an 18-year-old Israeli settler in a collision with a Palestinian vehicle near two of the attacked villages. Police are investigating claims by settlers that the collision was deliberate.

Israeli Military Response and Broader Context

Israel's military stated it responded to Israeli civilians engaging in "arson against structures and property, as well as engaging in disturbances in the area," but did not report any arrests or indicate whether investigations were initiated. This violence unfolds as Israel's government advances new settlement construction in the West Bank, with settler attacks intensifying alongside a broader surge in violence since the onset of the Iran war.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that 25 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli settlers and soldiers this year as of March 15. Additionally, the Palestinian Authority has documented a series of arson attacks, including on mosques, across the territory.

Gaza Strikes Add to Palestinian Casualties

In a separate incident, four Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday. One strike hit a vehicle in the central Nuseirat refugee camp, killing three police officers and wounding ten others, according to Awda Hospital. Another Palestinian was killed in Gaza City, as reported by Shifa Hospital.

These deaths represent the latest fatalities among Palestinians in the coastal enclave since an October ceasefire deal aimed to halt a more than two-year war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Although the heaviest fighting has subsided, the ceasefire has been marred by almost daily Israeli fire. Israeli forces have conducted repeated airstrikes and frequently fire on Palestinians near military-held zones, resulting in over 670 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health officials.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on Sunday's strikes but has previously asserted that Israel will respond to violations of the ceasefire and threats to its soldiers.
