More than 500 schools across Wales are set to close on Thursday, July 25, as the country braces for extreme heat under red and amber weather warnings. Local authorities have issued detailed lists of closures, with some schools shutting entirely and others operating partial days.
Anglesey and Blaenau Gwent
Anglesey County Council said there are no county-wide closure plans, but headteachers may decide individually. A spokesman stated: "The safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff remains our priority." Blaenau Gwent Council confirmed all schools in the area will be closed on Thursday.
Bridgend and Caerphilly
Bridgend County Borough Council listed over 50 schools closed, including all primary and secondary schools. Caerphilly County Borough Council announced closures for more than 70 schools, from Aberbargoed Primary to Y.G.G. Bro Allta.
Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion
Carmarthenshire Council said all secondary schools will close, with primary schools deciding individually. Ceredigion Council reported no confirmed closures yet, stating: "We will make every effort to keep schools open, where it is safe."
Conwy, Denbighshire, and Flintshire
Conwy County Borough Council reported no planned closures. Denbighshire County Council said Ysgol y Parc will close at 12:30 pm, with others remaining open. Flintshire's chief officer Claire Homard said: "Decisions are made by individual headteachers."
Gwynedd and Merthyr Tydfil
Gwynedd Council reported no recorded closures. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council listed 24 schools closed, including all primary and secondary schools.
Monmouthshire and Neath Port Talbot
Monmouthshire Council listed 25 schools closed, with Chepstow School and Kymin View Primary closing at lunch. Neath Port Talbot Council confirmed closures for over 60 schools, with several secondary schools switching to online learning.
Newport, Pembrokeshire, and Powys
Newport closures are to be confirmed. Pembrokeshire County Council said there is no plan to close schools at this time. Powys County Council listed seven schools closed, including Llanidloes High School and Ysgol Maesydderwen.
Rhondda Cynon Taf and Swansea
Rhondda Cynon Taf closures are to be confirmed. Swansea Council issued a detailed list of partial and full closures, affecting dozens of primary and secondary schools.
Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan
Torfaen County Borough Council said all schools except West Mon Y10 and Woodlands Nursery will close. Vale of Glamorgan Council listed partial and full closures for 18 schools.
Wrexham
Wrexham Council lead member for education, councillor Phil Wynn, said: "During this period of extreme warm weather, schools will operate using the Welsh Government guidelines." Decisions are made individually by headteachers.
