Adam Kay's First Murder Mystery Audiobook Reviewed: A Particularly Nasty Case

Andy Serkis narrates Adam Kay's debut murder mystery, A Particularly Nasty Case, bringing to life the author's signature pitch-black humour. The audiobook follows Dr Eitan Rose, a consultant rheumatologist who finds himself entangled in a suspicious death after a chance encounter in a gay sauna.

Dr Rose, who has recently returned to work following a mental health crisis, uses liquid cocaine from a nasal inhaler to cope. When his nemesis, Douglas Moran, dies unexpectedly, Eitan suspects foul play and launches his own investigation, performing illicit postmortems and impersonating a police detective. However, his colleagues and the police dismiss his claims, attributing them to his bipolar disorder.

Serkis energetically inhabits the character of Eitan, a misguided yet well-intentioned hero. While the plot requires some suspension of disbelief, particularly in the frantic final act, listeners will find themselves rooting for the flawed protagonist. The audiobook is published by Macmillan and runs for 14 hours and 17 minutes.
