Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan, renowned for his gritty depictions of crime and violence, is venturing into new literary territory with a book that delves into a world he has never personally experienced: life behind bars. Simon & Schuster announced on Tuesday that Sheridan's upcoming publication, How to Not Die in Prison, will hit shelves on 23 June, described as a "darkly funny survival guide" tailored for maximum-security prison environments.
From Screen to Page: A Unique Collaboration
Sheridan, who earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for the 2016 crime drama Hell or High Water and has overseen popular television series including Yellowstone, Tulsa King, and Mayor of Kingstown, acknowledges his lack of firsthand incarceration experience. In the book's introduction, he writes, "You might wonder what in the world gives me the knowledge or wisdom to write a survival guide to prison. Well, I'll tell you — absolutely nothing. I've never been to prison. But, like every man, I've certainly wondered how I would survive if circumstances ever put me there. That morbid curiosity sent me on a journey to understand the politics and dangers of prison."
Authenticity Through Partnership
To ensure the guide's credibility and depth, Sheridan partnered with co-author Tom Nelson, who spent over a decade incarcerated in medium and maximum-security prisons. Nelson reflected on their distinctive collaboration, stating, "Hey, one of us has written hit TV shows and Academy Award-nominated movies, and the other has spent much of his adult life behind bars in medium and maximum-security prisons. If that's what makes for good wisdom and entertainment, I'll take it." This partnership blends Sheridan's storytelling prowess with Nelson's real-world insights, aiming to provide a compelling and informative read.
Sheridan's Expanding Creative Portfolio
Beyond his television success, Sheridan's film credits include writing and directing the Angelina Jolie thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead and the Western-thriller Wind River, starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. His creative endeavors continue to expand, with recent confirmation from Paramount and Activision that Sheridan, alongside his Hell or High Water collaborator Peter Berg, is developing an adaptation of the blockbuster video game franchise Call of Duty. This move underscores Sheridan's versatility and influence across multiple entertainment mediums.
A Darkly Humorous Take on Survival
How to Not Die in Prison promises to offer readers a unique blend of humor and practical advice, exploring the complexities of prison life through a lens that is both entertaining and educational. Sheridan's exploration of this subject matter stems from a personal curiosity about survival in extreme circumstances, a theme that resonates with his body of work focused on crime and resilience. The book's release is anticipated to attract fans of his television series and those interested in criminal justice topics alike.
