Actress Recounts Terrifying Shark Attack on Son During Family Vacation
Actress Marichelo Puente has spoken publicly about a harrowing incident where her young son was bitten by a shark while playing in shallow water during a family holiday in Tulum, Mexico. The attack left the boy with significant injuries requiring extensive medical treatment.
Sudden Attack in Waist-Deep Water
The terrifying episode unfolded as Puente's children were playing at the water's edge in what appeared to be completely safe conditions. The water only reached their waists when suddenly, her son Patricio began screaming uncontrollably.
"My kids were at the water's edge, and the water didn't even reach their waists," Puente told her followers online. "Then we heard Patito screaming horribly, yelling that something had bitten him."
The actress immediately saw a tail disappearing into the sea and realized her son had been attacked by a marine predator. Patricio, whose father is singer Jorge D'Alessio from the group Matute, suffered bites on both legs with one wound being particularly severe.
Emergency Medical Response and Diagnosis
Patricio was rushed to hospital where doctors confirmed the injuries were consistent with a reef shark bite. Medical staff cleaned the wounds thoroughly and administered 30 stitches to close the lacerations. Despite the traumatic experience, the boy is now out of danger and recovering well.
"It's unbelievable, I'm still in shock," Puente said. "You never imagine something like this could happen."
Remarkably, the actress holds no animosity toward the shark, understanding it was likely acting defensively. "That shark wasn't out to get Pato," she explained. "It was just defending itself because it got scared, or whatever."
Warning to Beachgoers About Coastal Sharks
While shark attacks in Mexico remain relatively rare, Puente issued a stark warning to other holidaymakers. "Be extremely careful," she cautioned. "I know swimming in the sea is wonderful and so relaxing, but these things can happen - and more and more often. There really are sharks near the shore."
Tulum, like other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, is home to various shark species. Most are not considered high risk for swimmers, but this incident highlights that attacks can occur even in seemingly safe, shallow waters.
Previous Shark Attack Incident in Mexico
This is not the first serious shark attack to occur in Mexican waters in recent years. Two years ago, Dillon Armijo from Colorado, USA, required hospital care after a shark bit his leg while on holiday in Cancun.
The attack left him with:
- Two broken bones
- Extensive nerve damage
- Severed tendons
- A ruptured meniscus
The schoolboy described the incident: "We went to the beach and wanted to swim or jump in waves and then like, five minutes after that, like a shark just came into like, a wave and just bit my leg."
Armijo spent four days in a Mexican hospital before being airlifted to Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora. He has undergone several operations and is expected to walk again, though he faces extensive physiotherapy sessions.
His mother Abby Armijo noted: "We were very, very lucky that we were able to get a medevac back to the United States and get him here to do the last three surgeries. I think that was what has given him such a great outcome."
These incidents serve as sobering reminders that while shark attacks remain statistically uncommon, they can occur unexpectedly even in popular tourist destinations with generally safe swimming conditions.
