Alison Hammond Reveals She's Named After Muhammad Ali, Father Was His Bodyguard
Alison Hammond Named After Muhammad Ali, Father Was Bodyguard

In a surprising revelation on The Jonathan Ross Show, television presenter Alison Hammond has disclosed that she is named after the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. The 51-year-old star shared this intriguing personal detail, explaining that her father, Clifford Hammond, worked as a bodyguard for the sports icon, who passed away in 2016 at age 74 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

A Family Tribute to a Boxing Legend

Alison, whose father died in 2020, left the audience stunned as she recounted the story. 'Friends and family will call me Ali - Muhammad Ali,' she told Jonathan Ross. 'My dad named me and I've got a sister in Jamaica called Alicia and then I've got a brother called Ali. The three of us are named after Muhammad Ali, because my dad was his bodyguard - he absolutely loved him.'

She elaborated on her father's role, noting that whenever Muhammad Ali visited Birmingham, Clifford would be called upon to provide protection and support for the boxing superstar. This connection forged a deep admiration that extended to naming his children in honor of the athlete.

An Unforgettable Encounter

Alison also revealed that she had the opportunity to meet Muhammad Ali in person, though the experience was not what one might expect. 'You know, I've met him. But it was at an age where I didn't want to meet him,' she admitted. 'You know like when your mum drags you out. I didn't know who he was! I was like, pulling away from him... I got photos of me going, who's this weirdo?'

This anecdote highlights the humorous and relatable side of celebrity encounters, especially from a child's perspective.

Insights into Clifford Hammond's Life

Beyond his role as a bodyguard, Clifford Hammond led a multifaceted life. He was involved in importing trucks between the United Kingdom and the Caribbean, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. However, his personal life was complex; Alison's mother, Maria, only discovered he had another family when she was pregnant with Alison, ultimately raising the future TV star as a single parent.

In her book, You've Got To Laugh, Alison painted a vivid picture of her father's character. She described him as someone who 'definitely had the lifestyle' and was treated like a 'king' in his native Jamaica. His powerful presence often left local residents feeling uneasy.

'You could tell by the way people spoke about him that he was respected and feared in the community,' she wrote. 'They called him Mr Hammond and you could see the unease in their eyes when they spoke to him. I'm not surprised, either, because he drove everywhere with a massive shotgun tucked under his pick-up truck. He didn't mess around.'

A Bittersweet Farewell

When Clifford Hammond passed away in June 2020 after battling cancer, Alison shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. She posted a photo with the caption: 'This is my real Dad Clifford Hammond who passed away last week in Jamaica... I'm saddened that I won't be able to make his funeral and saddened that he wasn't part of my life as much as I would have liked but I still have a sense of loss and emptiness. Sleep well Daddy, love leaves a memory no one can steal. RIP.'

Tragically, her mother Maria had died just five months earlier, after fighting liver and lung cancer, adding to the emotional weight of the period.

Addressing Celebrity Rumours

During her appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Alison also addressed swirling rumours about her potential involvement in the upcoming series of Celebrity Traitors. She firmly quashed the speculation, citing scheduling conflicts.

'I can't do it, because I'm doing Bake Off,' she explained. 'I think it's the same time when I'm doing Bake Off, so that's a definite no. I'm so sorry, I would love to do that. I wouldn't want to be a Traitor though, I'd want to be a Faithful. I don't want no stress.'

This clarification puts to rest any fan theories about her participation in the popular reality show, while humorously expressing her preference for a less stressful role.
