Anthony Gordon faced harsh criticism from Spanish media for the second consecutive match after England's disappointing 0-0 draw with Ghana at the 2026 World Cup. The former Newcastle United winger, who completed a £70 million move to Barcelona, struggled to make an impact against a resolute Ghanaian defence.
England's Reality Check After Croatia Win
Following a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia, Thomas Tuchel's side were brought back down to earth in Boston. Despite dominating possession, England created few clear-cut chances against a stubborn Ghana side. The result leaves England's progress to the last-32 virtually assured, but the performance raised concerns.
Gordon's Struggles Continue
Gordon was handed a second start by Tuchel after an underwhelming display against Croatia, with Marcus Rashford again relegated to the bench. The winger was replaced by Bukayo Saka on 65 minutes after failing to break down the Ghana defence. Rashford had to wait until the 83rd minute to enter the fray, replacing Noni Madueke.
Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia described Gordon's performance as "lacklustre," writing: "As against Croatia, the winger failed to make a significant impact on the game. Although he was more involved in the play, he was imprecise in some of his dribbling, and his assists, while more purposeful, were wasted by his teammates."
Mixed Reviews from Spanish Outlets
AS offered a mixed assessment, praising Gordon's defensive work but criticising his attacking output, saying he was "excellent defensively but lacklustre in attack." Madrid-based Las Razon noted how Ghana "shut down the flanks" with full-backs Marvin Senaya and Gideon Mensah "effectively marking Gordon and Madueke." ABC added that Gordon "lacked the necessary finesse" to break down the Ghana defence and branded his tame second-half shot as easily saved.
Tuchel Urges Patience
Tuchel defended his team after the match, urging fans not to lose faith. "It is a long tournament. I think the boys tried everything and again they played with the right energy," he said. "I know it's a very different game and, in this case, if one team tries to play and to run against this deep block and you don't find the spaces, it is difficult for you to create chances. It is not as exciting as two teams trying to win it in a more open game. We always try to entertain our fans. It was difficult today. I hope they don't lose belief. It is a long way to go."
What's Next for England?
Given Gordon's lack of impact, it would be surprising to see him start England's group finale against Panama on Saturday. A win would likely secure top spot in Group L and an easier path in the knockout stages. Harry Kane missed England's best chance against Ghana, and Tuchel will be hoping for a more clinical performance against Panama.
