Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez were spotted arriving at Anna Wintour's pre-Met Gala party in New York City on Sunday evening. The 62-year-old Amazon founder and 56-year-old former journalist looked stylish as they stepped out of a black Cadillac SUV ahead of fashion's biggest night.
Bezos's Stylish Attire
Bezos wore a light grey suit, black shirt, and sleek black boots while holding Sanchez's hand. He sported a neatly trimmed white beard and lightly tinted aviator shades.
Sanchez's Elegant Look
Sanchez, his wife of nearly one year, joined him in a red jacquard ensemble featuring a long skirt and low-cut short-sleeved blazer. She punctuated her look with pointed-toe black stilettos and carried a small black handbag. Her brunette locks were arranged in a pristine blowout with a side part, one side tucked behind her ear.
Co-Chairing the Met Gala
The couple reportedly paid $10 million to co-chair the annual gala alongside Anna Wintour. They will serve as honorary co-chairs at Monday's Met Gala, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. Sources told Page Six the move put them in favor with Wintour, who has spearheaded the exclusive gala since 1995.
William Norwich, a former editor at Vogue, explained: 'The Bezoses are where the American dream is at right now for status, wealth and style. They display conspicuous consumption [and] they have the "AWOK" – the Anna Wintour OK.'
Controversy and Criticism
Some fashion enthusiasts consider the quid pro quo a stain on the affair, which originally highlighted philanthropy. They argue the extravaganza has become a celebrity spectacle. 'I'm heartbroken,' said one frequent Met Gala attendee. 'It's being able to buy yourself into [the good graces of] Anna and the Met.'
Last year's Met Gala raised $31 million, the highest total in the event's 77-year history. Bezos and Sanchez will sit with close pal Kris Jenner, whom they invited to their summer wedding in Venice, Italy last year.
