Eric Idle Confirms Decade-Long Separation from John Cleese
Eric Idle, the celebrated comedian and writer, has disclosed that he has not encountered his Monty Python co-star John Cleese for an entire ten years. This revelation underscores the profound and enduring rift between two of Britain's most iconic comedic talents, whose partnership once defined a generation of humour.
Public Feud and Friendship Dissolution
Over the past five years, Idle and Cleese have been embroiled in a highly publicised dispute, with Idle formally declaring their friendship "over" in 2024. The tensions reportedly stem from significant changes in the management of Monty Python's affairs, leading to a breakdown in their personal and professional relationship.
On Tuesday, 10 March 2026, Idle responded to a query on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, regarding Cleese's current status. A user remarked, "I ask you because you’re better placed than most to find out." Idle's candid reply was, "Actually, I’m not. I haven’t seen him for 10 years."
Roots of the Conflict: Management and Money
Idle has previously alleged that Cleese dismissed the troupe's long-time manager, Jim Beach, who was also a close friend, and appointed Holly Gilliam, daughter of fellow Python Terry Gilliam, in his stead. Cleese has vehemently denied this account, labelling it "an invention".
In a 2024 appearance on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, Idle elaborated on the nature of their discord. "We don’t disagree about comedy – this is only about money. This is only about business," he stated. "I mean, a fool and his money are easily parted – six of us, much more quickly."
He further explained, "There’s no right or wrong way to deal with business, and if somebody has one view of it, and somebody doesn’t, and somebody has another, those can lead to very bad arguments." Idle also attributed their hostilities to infrequent contact, noting, "Unfortunately, we don’t see each other enough. If you don’t sit across the table and know that person and what decade they’re in, I think that there’s a lot of room for disagreement."
Cleese's Perspective and Recent Reunions
John Cleese, renowned for his role in Fawlty Towers, has publicly endorsed Holly Gilliam's management, describing her as "very efficient, clear-minded, hard-working, and pleasant to have dealings with." He also indicated that fellow Pythons Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam share this positive assessment.
When questioned about Idle, Cleese once quipped on X, "We always loathed and despised each other, but it’s only recently that the truth has begun to emerge." He later clarified that this remark was intended as a humorous jest.
In May 2024, Cleese, Palin, and Gilliam reunited to celebrate Palin's 81st birthday, an event notably absent of Idle. This gathering highlighted the ongoing estrangement within the group.
Monty Python's Legacy and Current Dynamics
The legendary comedy troupe Monty Python was co-founded in 1969 by Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, and Terry Jones. They staged a series of reunion shows in 2014, though without Chapman, who passed away from tonsil cancer in 1989 at age 48. Jones died in 2020 at 77 from a rare form of dementia.
In 2025, Michael Palin reflected on the current state of their relationships, telling Saga Magazine, "I don’t think we keep in touch with each other as much now," and referring to the 2014 shows as "a very good farewell." This sentiment underscores the fading connections among the surviving members, with Idle and Cleese's decade-long separation serving as a poignant symbol of the troupe's fragmented legacy.
