French singer Guesch Patti, born Patricia Porrasse, died at the age of 80 in Paris in the early hours of Monday, June 22, 2026, following a long illness. Her representative, Sébastien d'Assigny, announced the news in a statement to AFP.
Career and Breakthrough Hit
Patti achieved worldwide fame with her 1987 single 'Étienne', which sold approximately 1.5 million copies globally. The song's music video, featuring her stripping to a fishnet bodysuit with tape covering her nipples, caused controversy but propelled the track to massive success in France and across Europe.
Despite her popularity and self-description as a "chameleon" who enjoyed working quietly across the arts, she never replicated the commercial triumph of 'Étienne'. In a 2001 AFP interview, she said: "I don't want to relive what I experienced with Etienne. I want to protect myself from further media hype. I'm done playing games." She described the fame as a "burden" in a 2002 France 3 interview, adding: "I think there was a kind of pressure that fell on me, which didn't suit my character at all."
Later Work and Tributes
Patti continued her music career with albums including 'Nomades', 'Gobe', 'Blonde', and 'Dernières nouvelles'. She also acted in theatre and film, notably in Claude Lelouch's 1999 film 'Une pour toutes'. Following her death, fans paid tribute on Facebook. One wrote: "She's gone, accompanied by the celebration of music... her greatest hit will live forever!" Another said: "I adored her. I have all her albums and... her talent wasn't limited to Étienne." A third commented: "Thinking of Guesch Patti. A free and influential artist, she left a unique mark on French music."
Patti's representative stated: "Guesch Patti, dancer, singer, actress, left us... following a long illness. She leaves behind... the memory of a woman full of life in her artistic expression."
