James McAvoy was assaulted at a bar in Toronto on Monday evening, according to reports. The actor, who is in the city for the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his directorial debut California Schemin', was punched by another patron at Charlotte's Room bar.
People magazine, citing a source close to McAvoy, reported that the actor was having a casual gathering with producers when a man who had drunk too much was being escorted out. As McAvoy's back was turned, the man punched him. McAvoy had not interacted with the man previously and did not provoke the attack.
Other patrons intervened and restrained the assailant, who was eventually removed from the premises. Following the incident, McAvoy remained at the bar and laughed off the event with staff and other customers.
California Schemin' is based on the true story of Scottish rap duo Silibil N' Brains, who pretended to be American to secure a record deal, as previously documented in the 2013 film The Great Hip-Hop Hoax.
