Jamie Redknapp: Parenting Is Not a Competition

Jamie Redknapp has spoken about his happy marriage to Louise and the importance of not comparing parenting styles. The former England footballer, 39, said that while his parents Harry and Sandra have been married for 45 years, he does not believe in staying together for the sake of it.

“It’s inspiring but you can only do it if it works. You don’t say, ‘oh my mum and dad have been together ages so we will stay together’,” he said. “If you don’t get on with the person you are with, there is no point. Luckily enough I am with someone I get on well with.”

Jamie, who has two sons Charley, eight, and Beau, four, with his wife Louise, a former Eternal singer turned businesswoman, believes that both partners having their own careers helps their relationship. “What works for both of us is that Louise works hard at what she does... The fact that she needs something to wake up and aspire to do and it’s the same for me. So we don’t get under each other’s feet,” he said.

The Sky Sports pundit also reflected on supporting his father Harry during his tax evasion trial 16 months ago. Jamie attended court every day and stayed with his father in a hotel. “He’s my best mate and I know he’d do the same for me,” Jamie said. Harry added: “Jamie was there every day during the trial, he kept me going.”
