Kristen Bell has faced criticism after sharing an anniversary tribute to husband Dax Shepard that referenced spousal murder, with many pointing out that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the US.
The 45-year-old actress posted a photo on Instagram of their daughter sitting on Shepard's lap, captioning it: 'Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: “I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.”'
Fans quickly called the post 'insensitive' and 'tone deaf'. One comment with over 17,000 likes said: 'Kristen there’s no way you posted this during domestic violence awareness month.' Another wrote: 'Please don’t joke about domestic violence. This is something real that lots of people suffer on a daily basis.'
The post also sparked discussion on the Fauxmoi subreddit, where a popular comment with nearly 3,000 upvotes read: 'Posting this during Domestic Violence Awareness Month is beyond the pale.'
Bell and Shepard, who have been married since 2013, share two daughters. They first met in 2007 and waited to marry until same-sex marriage was legalised in the US, tying the knot at a Beverly Hills courthouse in 2013.
