Eurovision Legend Loreen Embarks on New Acting Venture
Loreen, the Swedish music sensation who made history as the first woman to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice, has announced a significant career shift into acting. The 42-year-old artist, born Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui, secured her place in Eurovision lore with victories in 2012 and 2023, while her music has amassed over nine billion streams globally. Her latest album, WILDFIRE, released after a nine-year hiatus, continues her musical success, but she is now focusing on the silver screen with a film debut in her home country.
From Music Stardom to Acting Debut
In an interview with The Sun, Loreen discussed her foray into acting, explaining the emotional intensity of the craft. She noted, "What I found is that the brain cannot separate what is real and not real. So whatever emotion you're enhancing in yourself, you're actually enhancing in your own body." Reflecting on challenging scenes, she added, "I had to dig out and even recreate a reality that is not real and it sat in my body." Loreen expressed a desire to take on superhero roles with happy endings, drawn to the idea of saving the world.
Rise to Fame and Eurovision Journey
Loreen's career began at age 20 when she participated in Sweden's 'Idol' in 2004, finishing fourth and performing covers by artists like Celine Dion and Pink. Initially performing as Lorén Talhaoui, she released her first single in 2005, reaching ninth in Swedish charts. After a hiatus working in TV production, she returned to the spotlight, entering Sweden's Melodifestivalen in 2011. Though she failed to qualify that year, she triumphed in 2012 with 'Euphoria', sending her to Eurovision in Baku, Azerbaijan.
During the 2012 contest, Loreen's meeting with human rights activists sparked controversy, with Azerbaijani officials criticizing the politicization, but she won with 372 points from 40 countries. 'Euphoria' charted at number three in the UK, the highest for a non-UK Eurovision entry since 1987. Her music career flourished with tours, TV appearances, and awards like the MTV Europe Music Awards' Best Swedish Act.
Historic Double Victory and Future Aspirations
After a failed Melodifestivalen attempt in 2017, Loreen returned in 2023 with 'Tattoo', which topped Swedish charts despite a stage invasion by an activist during her performance. She advanced to win Eurovision in Liverpool with 177 points, marking Sweden's seventh victory, tying Ireland's record. With over nine billion streams and hit singles like 'Tattoo' dominating airplay in five countries, Loreen now balances her music legacy with acting ambitions, aiming to inspire through both mediums.
