Louie Spence Speaks Candidly About Mental Health and Strictly Come Dancing Rumours
Louie Spence, the renowned dancer and television personality, has granted an exclusive interview to The Mirror, delving into his personal struggles with mental health, addressing persistent Strictly Come Dancing rumours, and reflecting on the changing landscape of reality television. The interview reveals a multifaceted individual who champions breaking routine while navigating his own psychological challenges.
Embracing Spontaneity and Breaking Habits
Spence is currently collaborating with Dr Pepper on their #TryMoreWeird campaign, promoting the new Dr Pepper Cream Swirl flavour. This initiative encourages Britons to embrace spontaneity, supported by a study revealing the nation's deep-seated habits. "Every now and then it's really good to just break something that is habit," Spence advised. He emphasized the liberation found in altering simple daily routines, such as changing coffee times or dog-walking schedules.
"Fortunately, the kind of job I do is very diverse," Spence noted, contrasting his career with more regimented family routines. He believes stepping out of comfort zones enriches life through new experiences and connections.
Confronting Anxiety and Depression
Beyond his vibrant public persona, Spence openly discussed his ongoing battle with anxiety and depression. "I have to battle with my anxiety, and when I get anxious, it can turn into depression," he confessed. He described proactively combating these feelings to prevent descending into a "hole," viewing his visible joy as a conscious effort to not let mental health struggles dominate.
"I'm not afraid to share this side of me because it may help someone," Spence stated, highlighting the importance of transparency about mental health issues.
Reflections on Reality Television Evolution
Spence rose to fame through the 2010 series Pineapple Dance Studios, which he distinguishes from contemporary reality shows. "Pineapple was classed as a reality show but it wasn't like Towie... or Made in Chelsea where they created scenarios," he explained. He characterized his show as an observational documentary without scripting or producer encouragement, contrasting it with today's more manufactured formats.
Strictly Come Dancing Speculations
Addressing widespread rumours about Strictly Come Dancing, including professional dancer exits and new hosts following Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman's departures, Spence shared his perspective. While some suggest he should judge, he noted the distinct nature of ballroom and Latin dance compared to his background. "It's like the difference between hip-hop and classical ballet," he analogized.
Regarding potential contestants, Spence remarked, "I think people would perceive me as being a dancer, so I can't be a contestant." However, he acknowledged the show has featured trained dancers before and humorously added, "I think I would be pretty fabulous but I don't think they'd ask me."
For new hosts, he endorsed Rylan and Zoe Ball, praising Rylan's personality and longevity. Spence also pondered the show's future, questioning, "Who knows how many more years a show like that will last? Things are moving so quickly now."
Future Ventures and Personal Projects
Spence is exploring new opportunities, including a potential stint on I'm A Celebrity... where he would confront numerous phobias. Additionally, he has launched a YouTube series, Louie Spence in Care, where he visits care homes as an "CEO of entertainment" to bring joy through celebrity visits. "I wanted to do something where we just bring joy and happiness," he explained, focusing on positivity rather than typical care home narratives.
The interview coincides with the nationwide release of Dr Pepper Cream Swirl, part of the brand's campaign to encourage embracing uniqueness and breaking mundane routines.
