Zoe Ball Discusses Her 'Painful' Divorce from Norman Cook After 18 Years
Radio presenter Zoe Ball has spoken candidly about her challenging divorce from former husband Norman Cook, following their eighteen-year marriage. The fifty-five-year-old broadcaster and former radio DJ opened up about the split during the latest episode of her podcast Dig It with Jo Whiley, describing the experience as deeply painful.
Marriage History and Brief Separation
Zoe Ball and Norman Cook, better known as DJ Fatboy Slim, tied the knot in 1999. Their relationship faced a temporary rupture in 2003 when Zoe admitted to having an affair. Norman, now sixty-two, forgave her, and the couple continued their marriage until they announced their permanent separation in 2016. The former pair share two children: Woody Fred Cook, aged twenty-four, and Nelly May Louise Cook, aged fifteen.
Podcast Advice on Divorce
During the podcast episode, Zoe and co-host Jo Whiley read a listener's comment about an impending divorce. Drawing from her own experience, Zoe offered heartfelt advice to those facing similar situations. She explained the emotional turmoil involved, stating: 'You try everything and then think this is not working. The anticipation of just coming out with it and saying to your partner "right it's the time". It's so scary because it's overwhelming on all fronts, you're worrying about the kids, you're worrying about your partner, you're worrying about you and how it will all work out.'
Zoe emphasized resilience, adding: 'Something I can tell you from personal experience is, yes it is a lot to go through but you will come out the other side of it. The fact that you know you need to do this, you will all be better in the end. The kids will be fine, it's amazing how resilient kids can be.'
Personal Struggles and Living Arrangements
Reflecting on her split from Norman, Zoe shared details about her living situation post-divorce. She attempted to move just a few doors down, benefiting from her mother's nearby residence. However, she found this proximity uncomfortable after a while, describing it as 'all quite painful' and noting she did not pursue the 'nesting' co-parenting arrangement herself.
Current Relationships and Past Tragedies
In January, the Daily Mail revealed that Zoe has been dating BAFTA-winning production designer Mathieu Weekes, forty-nine, for over a year. Prior to this relationship, she was with former construction worker Michael Reed for five years until their split in 2023, reportedly due to Michael becoming 'a bit demanding'. Before Michael, Zoe dated cameraman Billy Yates, who tragically died by suicide in May 2017 after battling depression.
Improved Post-Divorce Relationship
Interestingly, Zoe's father Johnny Ball, an eighty-seven-year-old former children's TV presenter, recently disclosed that Zoe and Norman now have a better relationship than during their marriage. In an interview with Boom Radio, he stated: 'They're very good friends today, you know. They're great friends. They're divorced, but they're better…. If you like they're closer today than they were when they were married. And that's a lovely thing. It's a lovely thing.' This revelation comes nearly a decade after the couple confirmed their separation in 2016.
Zoe Ball's openness about her divorce provides a rare glimpse into the personal challenges faced by public figures, offering solace and practical advice to others navigating similar life changes. Her story underscores the complexities of long-term relationships, the pain of separation, and the possibility of finding friendship and peace after divorce.
