Oscar-nominated Irish actor Barry Keoghan was almost impossible to recognise while filming in Dublin this weekend, undergoing a startling physical transformation for a poignant new role.
A Dramatic On-Set Transformation
The 33-year-old star, typically known for his shaven dark hair, was spotted with a head of long, ginger curls. He completed the unconventional look with a pair of pyjama bottoms, fully embodying his character named Josh.
This radical change is for the forthcoming low-budget film titled Lemonade, directed by Kim Barley. The project also features a cast of Irish talent including Lewis Brophy, Connie Doona, and Graham Earley.
The Personal Story Behind 'Lemonade'
Reports indicate the film will serve as a semi-autobiographical exploration of Keoghan's own life, tackling the harrowing subject of drug addiction. The filming is taking place in Dublin, not far from where the actor himself grew up, adding a layer of personal resonance to the production.
This theme is deeply connected to Keoghan's own childhood trauma. His mother, Debbie, died from a heroin overdose when he was just 12 years old, and he had no relationship with his father. In a 2024 appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast, he remembered his "lovely, gorgeous" mother, sadly recalling how her addiction "caught her," a memory he stated still haunts him.
As a result of his mother's struggles, Barry and his younger brother Eric entered foster care at age five. The pair lived in 13 different homes before eventually settling with their aunt and grandmother in a two-bedroom flat.
Hollyway Fame and a Public Breakup
Keoghan's career has skyrocketed in recent years, propelled by his acclaimed role in Saltburn and his high-profile relationship with American singer Sabrina Carpenter. The pair met at Paris Fashion Week in September 2023 and dated until late 2024.
Despite the split being over a year ago, Carpenter appeared to reference the relationship in a recent social media dig. She reposted a TikTok on her page stating, "It's been a tough year, but at least I didn't get back with my ex." The clip featured her song Manchild, which fans widely believe was written about Keoghan following their breakup.
When asked directly if Manchild was inspired by Keoghan during an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Sabrina cleverly avoided answering, instead taking a long sip of beer on camera, leaving the speculation to continue.
As Keoghan throws himself into this deeply personal film project in Dublin, he continues to navigate his journey from a turbulent childhood to Hollywood fame, channelling his lived experience into his powerful on-screen performances.
