Timothée Chalamet's Marty Supreme Smashes Box Office Record Before Release
Chalamet's Marty Supreme Breaks Box Office Record

Timothée Chalamet's highly anticipated new film, Marty Supreme, has achieved a remarkable box office feat, breaking a significant record days before its official theatrical debut.

Record-Breaking Limited Release

The A24 sports drama, directed by Josh Safdie of Uncut Gems fame, enjoyed a sold-out limited domestic release this past weekend. It screened in just six theatres across New York and Los Angeles ahead of its wide release on Christmas Day.

According to industry outlet Deadline, the film is projected to earn a stunning three-day total of $875,000. This figure averages out to an impressive $145,900 per screen, securing its place as the highest per-screen average of 2025.

This achievement dethrones Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme, which previously held the 2025 record with a per-screen average of $95,000. Furthermore, Marty Supreme now stands as A24's highest per-screen average ever, surpassing the previous record held by Safdie's own Uncut Gems ($107,448).

Critical Acclaim and Oscar Buzz

The film has garnered widespread critical praise, currently holding a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Chalamet's performance as aspiring table tennis champion Marty Mauser is being hailed as a career-best.

Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent awarded the film four stars, calling it a "powder keg of a ping-pong movie" that confirms Chalamet as "one of our greatest talents." This acclaim has fuelled predictions that the 29-year-old actor will secure his third Oscar nomination for Best Actor at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Chalamet's dedication to the role was substantial; he revealed spending six years preparing, working with a coach to perfect his table tennis skills. "They got me to a level where I could make it look good and precise," he told ABC News.

A Major Comeback and Historical Ranking

Marty Supreme also marks a significant Hollywood return for Gwyneth Paltrow, who appears in one of her first major film roles since stepping back to focus on her lifestyle brand, Goop.

The film's spectacular per-screen average launch places it at number 15 in history for best opening per-screen averages. It now sits behind legendary blockbusters including:

  • La La Land ($176,220)
  • Frozen ($243,390)
  • Toy Story 2 ($300,163)
  • 1994's The Lion King ($793,376)

Marty Supreme will be released widely in US cinemas on 25 December (Christmas Day). Audiences in the UK will be able to see the film from 26 December (Boxing Day).
