BBC Morning Live presenter Gethin Jones gave fans a candid and aching update from his weekend, revealing the physical toll of his charitable sporting efforts.
A Weekend of Sporting Pains for a Good Cause
The Cardiff-born broadcaster, who turns 48 in February, took to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, January 18, to share his experience. Despite being off-duty from the BBC studio, relaxation was not on the agenda. Instead, Jones threw himself into Doddie Aid, a January initiative that encourages activity while raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease research.
In his first clip, Jones was already feeling the effects of a return to padel tennis after a three-month break due to a bad back. "My God I feel like everything hurts," he confessed to followers. He was about to embark on an hour-long cycling challenge hosted by TV and radio personality OJ Borg, known as the Doddie Ride, hoping it might help.
From the Bike to the Studio: A Busy Return
After completing the cycling challenge alongside over 450 other participants, a visibly exhausted Jones shared another update. "Did it with over 450 people this morning, the Doddie ride," he said, urging support to "find a cure together."
This energetic weekend followed his recent return to BBC Morning Live after a festive break spent performing in pantomime at Cardiff's New Theatre. Back on the daytime sofa, Jones quickly made his voice heard on a serious issue.
Outrage Over 'Awful' Wildlife Attack Report
During a broadcast last week, Jones and co-host Helen Skelton discussed a disturbing crime report with Crimewatch's Rav Wilding. The segment focused on schoolboys in a Welsh town attacking birds with slingshots and catapults.
Opening the discussion, Jones said the headline "just sounds awful." Rav Wilding explained that officers had confiscated the weapons, noting someone had been hurt and vehicles damaged. He clarified that while owning a slingshot isn't inherently illegal, using it to injure people, wildlife, or cause criminal damage is "highly illegal."
Jones responded with clear dismay, stating: "Firing at birds, really? What's that about? It's ridiculous."
BBC Morning Live airs on BBC One weekdays at 9.30am and is available on BBC iPlayer.
